god i fucking love the bravery mechanic in twewy!!!

it's such a genius way to handle gender locking equipment without anything actually being gender-locked. and i think it touches on something that is one; real, and two; a slice of the cultural atmosphere twewy was created in, like a lot of things in this game are. like, yeah you DO have to be braver to wear womens clothing generally, performing femininity has a higher barrier of entry, and especially so in 2007.

and i love love love the BRV requirements varying by brand/style as well, like yeah it DOES take a lot of bravery to wear gothic lolita. that for sure takes so much more courage than wearing a cheap solid colour t-shirt.

i'm of course never ever getting over joshua having the second highest base bravery after shiki, aka the highest of the guys, but more interesting than that to me is beat having the lowest. like. until post-game changes the relationship with brv as a stat, bravery = femininity, or at least comfort with with performing femininity. so shiki at 109 base BRV > joshua at 39 > neku at 14 > and beat at 4, is absolutely stellar characterization, for all of them. because it makes so so much sense, and it’s shown!

if BRV were purely “bravery” in the most literal sense with no relation to gender, then i wouldn't understand beat having a lower base stat than neku. i do not think there is a world where beat is less courageous than neku of day 1. but beat is ABSOLUTELY more MASCULINE than neku, what with his big boy machismo talk like “don't get your panties in a twist” and “you man up any yet? ‘cause i don’t believe in hittin’ women and children”. the idea of what a “man” is, something “strong”, something as far away as possible from “women” or “weakness”, is something incredibly important to beat! and that makes it known in his BRV stat! (and there is an irony in that. beat being tethered as he is to the ideal of masculinity and therefore strength, can’t equip the strongest threads without the most significant grinding of BRV…)

and of course the relationship BRV has with femininity largely falls apart with the appearance of post-game threads with absurd BRV requirements, but there’s still a little something to be said about the item with the highest BRV requirement in the game being one with a character-specific ability for joshua.

crazy how barbie was simultaneously a really thoughtful and reflective movie about her legacy and how she can grow past it, a mid movie that just kind of parrots the most inoffensive introduction to feminism ass points about how its really hard to be a woman and all women on the planet have Definitely felt this specific emotion before, and a fun but brainless movie about the kens seizing power in barbieland bc they recognized their status as secondclass citizens and accessories which is resolved by placating them with a single seat in congress because women are obviously better equipped to lead. 6/10 movie

actually incredibly funny to me that ranpos entire thing centres on how his intelligence is not because of an ability or any other great thing, its just him. hes entirely, completely, inarguably human. and Yet, when it comes to dazai, so many people are Desperate that there just Has to be another explanation. his intelligence cant just be that hes unusual, no it must be a marker of separation, of difference so great it disallows the reality of his humanity.

one difference between the japanese and english versions of octopath 2 that i find interesting is that most NPCs in the japanese version have a "title" attached to their name... this ranges from things like their job ("silver merchant papp" and "newspaper reporter ori") to things other characters call them ("star" dolcinaea and "great noble alrond")

the localization's decision to not mirror this entirely was probably at least partially because of space limitations... the title used for papp would be really long in english (silver merchant) while just being 3 letters in japanese (銀商人) but it is pretty interesting to see where they decided to leave the titles in. i think the english rightfully thought a lot of these titles were redundant and over-explainy in most cases which i think does suit english better

in hikari's story specifically though you see titles change a LOT... they're a lot more important in his story compared to others' because of the emphasis on military rank we see throughout his story so it makes sense that english replicates a lot of these;

chapter 1: king jigo and general mugen

chapter 3: king mugen, general rou and captain ritsu

chapter 4: lady rai mei

chapter 5: general ritsu

one thing to note is that the localization never gives benkei and ageha their respective titles, 重臣 (juushin, chief vassal) and 兵長 (heichou, lance corporal/captain/idk man finding equivalents of military titles is hard) i also want to mention that rai mei's title in ch.4 literally means lady as in "lord/lady of a castle" (城主 joushu) which i feel like is lost a little in english

i do like this emphasis on titles in hikari's story especially because it makes their absence feel a lot more meaningful... ritsu especially changes titles in almost every appearance, going from 剣士 (kenshi, warrior) in ch.1 to 兵隊長 (heitaichou, captain) in ch.3 to eventually 将軍 (shougun, general) but he's missing a title during his childhood flashback in ch.3 and during the brief scene we see of him and mikka in ch.5. i know the latter is... most likely to not spoil the fact that he's been made a general in the very next scene but i do really really like that this is a scene we see of him with mikka... it's like titles don't matter when he's with her. mikka is also i think the only major NPC in hikari's story who doesn't ever get a title? even tsuki has one (従者 juusha, attendant)

similarly, rai mei doesn't have a title in her first appearance during ch.1 and the flashback in ch.4 but has the title "lady" when she's in castle mei, and then loses the title again when she comes for hikari's aid in ch.5. i like that for rai mei, her title represents her burden and is only present when she's following mugen's orders... just as ritsu, who follows mugen for most of the story, is entirely bound by his titles. these are mostly mirrored in the localization as well! (the only exception being ritsu's "warrior" title in ch.1 being missing)

kazan also follows a similar progression where he is known as tactician (軍師 gunshi) for the entire story until he reveals his true name oboro, which has no title attached

hikari, as a protagonist, never has a title attached to his name so it's interesting to see how he fits into all this... we see 3 kings throughout the course of the story but hikari doesn't get the title of king attached to his name and of course the scene we see him as king is when he removes his crown to speak frankly to his people... i think it's nice

Never skip any readings and never use AI.

Think about it in this way if the temptation ever arises: most likely, you (not necessarily you, Anon—the general, collective "you" applies throughout) will be paying for your tuition and you don't want a machine to rob you blind of the chance to do the intellectual labor yourself. After all, would you give your education to someone else? No, right? So, an unthinking machine that produces hackneyed clichés of all things has absolutely no right to it either.

If that is not convincing enough, think of this instead:

Past generations never relied on AI or the "easy" way out (which results in less learning), so do you want to be worse off than them? Do you want to be "inferior" and less accomplished? No!

(If you "must" cheat, at least try to learn your lesson or something from the experience. Better yet, do not cheat at all! If you have, you've shortchanged yourself and have dented your integrity/self-image.)

Or, to put it even more extremely: do you want to represent the (probable) decline in academic performance as time goes on? Become a statistic? No. Right?

No one should want to be viewed as part of "those kids" whose literacy and writing skills have dropped, to the point that professors complain they have to teach/reinforce the basics before they even get to the target-level material you've paid for or earned your way to. Wouldn't you feel guilty if your professors complained about that, a problem which never before existed in their time? If you're not a part of the problem, you can at the very least separate yourself and feel like you're in a better position than those classmates who do use AI or who pad their papers with meaningless fluff.

Thus, the pressure isn't on, per se, but you don't want to become representative of the stupid side of humanity—and I imagine no one would want to if they could prevent it and have to sense to think for themselves.

Please, do yourself a favor by just trying, revising, and asking questions. It's not that hard.

And now, argument the third:

Would you trust a professional who only graduated because they relied on AI and are, in reality, incompetent? There's no telling what could go wrong and God forbid they were a medical student who should have failed who's operating on you.

i know i said i was happy about how mel's story went, but the more i think about it the less i'm sure about that. this is very much connected to how the themes of classism and wealth disappeared in s2, but mel in the beginning was the epitome of piltover. she wanted to advance piltover to prove herself to her mother. to "put piltover—" and by extension herself, "—on the map."

she wanted wealth just to have it. and i'm not blaming her for anything that happened, especially with hextech! she, just like jayce and viktor, could not have known what it would lead to. i mean yeah heimerdinger said so but who the hell listens to heimerdinger? but anyway i think mel changed throughout s1, much in thanks to jayce. by the end she's become more cognisant of the mistreatment of zaunites. she's the first to vote for their peace. she was a good person all along but now she knows how to act on it. it's also seen more in s2 act 1. when she covers her painting with gold, it's symbolic—she won't act according to what her mother might think. she won't let her desire for approval dictate her anymore.

so somehow i wish those themes were. continued, somehow? like again they were dropped not just with mel but the whole show and it makes her story a off to me. there's no meaningful commentary on war or classism or how her ideology stands opposite to her mother's. like some people have said, it feels like she doesn't have much agency, even if she is really cool. and that to me is a shame because agency felt like her thing. "to shape your own destiny" as she says to jayce in s1. i know her collaborating with the black rose (but not fully joining them) and learning magic is supposed to represent becoming independent from her mother, taking her own path, but some other aspects of her character were thrown away... the more i think about it the more i'm thinking they kind of #girlboss-ed her a little bit. maybe to sell another champion. i can't help but feel like even though i enjoyed seeing her on screen, the payoff didn't feel proportionally satisfying compared to her setup in s1.
